FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

BARBADOS Chooses AXSES

BTA MAKES BOLD MOVE WITH LEADING EDGE TECHNOLOGY.

The Barbados Tourism Authority (BTA) is gearing up to be a leader in the world of Internet, CD-ROM, Kiosks and information technology in general. It is doing this by using a series of strategic information systems including Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Digital Video Multimedia, and database technology. The technology has been developed over the last 3 years and is now ready to be installed. It centres around a unique database driven system that will be the basis for a range of information products including; in house systems for BTA's local and overseas offices, CD-ROM products distributed to the travel industry and the general public, Public access Kiosks, and an Internet service for the travel trade.

Ian Clayton, Managing Director of AXSES sums it up; "It is a new way for any Tourism Authority to generate a whole set of information products, including promotional products, that will be the information infrastructure for the industry. Our approach is generate an extensive and complete Tourism Directory that includes all properties and everything that will interest a tourist or business investor. The Tourism Directory is the focus around which private promotion activities can be anchored. Right now, on the Internet for example, there are hundreds of pages of information on individual properties and activities in Barbados, all purporting to be the Authoritative Information System of Barbados. Some are good, many are inadequate and some are an embarrassment. Few people can find what they want and many have no way of knowing where to look. With the new BTA Tourism Directory there will be one source for all, that will be published and promoted by BTA on an international scale. It will be the only place anyone need to go to find exactly what they are looking for."

AXSES/SCL a venture between AXSES of Nova Scotia and SYSTEMS Caribbean Ltd. of Barbados, will manage the database and create the Internet Directory, the CD-ROM and the Kiosk systems. BTA, BHTA and TDC are one hundred percent behind the initiative with its international marketing effort and BTA will be responsible for the information content.

But the system goes beyond being a simple electronic publication. Normally an Internet system consists of pages of information that are linked together by Hot Words, so that when you touch the Hot Word it takes you to another page. The new BTA system will provide this option but in addition it takes advantage of WebAXSES, a new piece of technology developed by AXSES which allows users to search a database on the Internet.

A travel agent will be able to look for all hotels that are on a more secluded beach with a panoramic view of the ocean, have a swimming pool, a tennis court and are under $200 per day per person, as an example. The exact query can be formed by selecting options from pages on the Internet and the result are displayed as a list of Hotels. To get more information and see pictures of the facilities of a hotel the user will touch the required hotel on the list.

John Gibbs, Director of Information Technology at SYSTEM Caribbean is excited by the new venture, "I have over the last few years seen many systems that are supposed to be leading edge, but none come close to this. Not only is it visually exciting, entertaining and informative, but AXSES has carefully researched the travel market and understand clearly what they are doing. We are very fortunate to have them to work with us"
